Update Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group – Preoperative radiotherapy combined with total mesorectal excision for resectable rectal cancer: 12-year follow-up of the multicentre, randomised controlled TME trial.

Lancet Oncol. 2011 Jun;12(6):575-82. Preoperative short-term radiotherapy reduced 10-year local recurrence by more than 50% relative to surgery alone and significantly improved 10-year survival in patients with a negative circumferential margin and TNM stage III. Future staging techniques should offer possibilities to select patient groups for which the balance between benefits and side-effects will result in sufficiently large gains. Continue reading

France – A Comparative Study of Complete Cytoreductive Surgery Plus Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy to Treat Peritoneal Dissemination From Colon, Rectum, Small Bowel, and Non pseudomyxoma Appendix

Ann Surg. 2010 May;251(5):896-901. Cytoreductive surgery plus intraperitoneal chemotherapy yields satisfying and similar survival results in the treatment of PC from colon, rectum, and smallbowel adenocarcinomas. Results were better for appendix adenocarcinoma. When feasible, this combined approach should become the gold standard treatment of PC. Continue reading

Short-term outcomes of laparoscopic total mesorectal excision following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy

Surg Endosc. 2010 Apr;24(4):933-8. In our experience, laparoscopic TME for mid and lower rectal cancer is feasible and safe. Patients benefit from the short-term advantages of laparoscopy, including shorter length of hospital stay, time to tolerating a regular diet, and time to first bowel movement or stoma function. Although there were no short-term differences in oncologic parameters, the long-term oncologic outcome requires further investigation. Continue reading
